Natural cough syrup to fight sore throat and cough symptoms

Healing Power of Onion and GingerI like to share a well-used grandma recipe, of natural cough syrup. As a child, I hated this syrup, but over time I appreciated the healing power of natural medicine.    Main or basic ingredient: onions, honey or sugarAdditional ingredients to boost natural cough syrup: ginger, lemon   What about the Onion? The onion contains the natural antibiotic allicin, which has antibacterial and fungicidal effects. Thanks to it, the onion is used as an auxiliary treatment for colds, for upper respiratory problems or for coughs. Onions conceal many active substances. Onion not only provide flavour and crying eyes, they also provide important nutrients and health promoting phytochemicals. -High in vitamin C, onions is a good source of dietary fibre, and folic acid.-They also contain calcium, iron, and have a high protein quality (ratio of mg amino acid/gram protein).-Onions are low in sodium and contain no fat.-Onions contain quercetin, a flavonoid (one category of antioxidant compounds). What about the Ginger? The healing power of Ginger not only adds delicious flavour to food. It’s also full of nutrients. People have been using the root for cooking and healing for thousands of years.Ancient writings from Rome, Greece, China, and Arab countries all describe ginger’s uses as a medicine. It was especially popular in Asian medicine as a treatment for stomach issues, including nausea and diarrhoea. Other traditional medical uses of ginger include treating muscle and joint pain, cold and flu symptoms, stomach pain, menstrual pain, and skin burns. Ginger also prides itself to contain lots of other different vitamins and minerals to benefit our general wellbeing. How to go about it…Clean the onion and cut into slices and washed lemon.Prepare a glass jar, it can be a bowl or a wider bottle. Layer onion, fold with lemon and ginger and pour or sprinkle with honey. You can also include garlic.  Continue until you have finished all the ingredients. Then let the syrup rest for at least 2-4 hours. Occasionally, you can shake the bowl to let the onions release the juice. When you see the juice mixed well with honey or sugar, squeeze the mixture through a sieve, squeeze the onion and lemon juice. You have a cough syrup ready to use. Mine is ready!
